A new formula for science
The content and delivery of science courses is set to change, with a new emphasis on scientific literacy, showing students 'how science works' and how it can be relevant to everyday life. There will be more opportunity for discussion and debate, particularly around science-based stories that appear in the media, e.g. topics such as pollution, genetically modified foods and cloning.
All exam boards will be introducing new specifications to match the new criteria.
"So often students were asking us, 'What is the point learning this?'" says Leonie Lisle, assistant team leader for science at Lyndon School in Solihull, Birmingham. "We'd become disaffected with the traditional qualifications on offer and wanted something much more relevant and up to date that would stimulate our students and staff."
